Bulldog Choke

BY BURT RICHARDSON

This is a choke that comes up everyone once in a while, but if you land it, the opponent is finished. The most famous example was when Carlos Newton used the Bulldog Choke to finish the great Matt Hughes.

The entry is similar to applying a headlock, but your arm must go much deeper. Get the back of the opponent’s head/neck in your armpit so you can line up the inside of your elbow with his trachea. This ensures that your forearm and upper arm will target the carotid arteries, and won’t crush the wind pipe. Once in place, push your hips forward, lean back, and drop your weight on him so he cannot take you down. Constrict your arm and wait for the tap!
