This method of finishing a guillotine gives the benefit of applying tremendous pressure without going to the ground. This works best if you can back your opponent into the cage to keep him from moving.

Loop your choking hand deep around the opponent’s neck. You want to have your hand above the top of his head, instead of near the side of his neck as in most guillotines. Place the palm of your free hand into your other palm.

To apply choking pressure, push with your left hand while constricting your right arm. Pushing adds extra pressure to the constriction so you can put your opponent to sleep while still on your feet.

Up Kick

Renzo Gracie made the up kick fa- mous when he used it to knock out the extremely tough Oleg Taktarov way back in 1996. First, develop a good guard to keep the opponent at your feet. Bring your heel straight up the middle to strike the chin or face. Make the kick ballistic with a snap at the end for greater effect.

If the opponent is standing tall over you, roll back on your shoulders and lift your hips upward so your kick will reach the target.

If you are on your back with the op- ponent in your guard, don’t just think about grappling. Always look to use the up kick to stun your opponent. It can be the beginning of the end.
