Ring Girl: 7/11/14

Since 2008, Destiny MMA has been bringing amazing bouts to fans in Hawaii. On Aug. 2 get ready for more than 20 matches at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. “We’re trying to build the next wave of talent to go to the UFC,” explains Destiny promoter Jay Bolos … Making her debut in the MMA fight world at Destiny’s Na Koa VI is Angela Lee of Mililani. The recent Mililani High graduate will go up against Monica Franco of Jesus is Lord in her first amateur bout as an adult (she turned 18 earlier this month). Prior to the Aug. 2 fights, Lee has competed on national and international stages. Lee took home gold last August for the 2013 FILA World Championships in Split, Croatia, in the 53-kilo. division and 53-kilo.pankration division, while also managing to snag a silver medal in the 65-kilo. pankration division. Her ground game is definitely her strong point, as she was the 2013 121-lbs. state champion for wrestling. “I’m working on my standup,” she explains. “(My opponent) is a good kick boxer, so I’ve been working on my feet.” Lee feels that the atmosphere in the ring will be different than most of her other bouts due to the higher caliber of focus and determination. “They’re training harder,” she says. “They’re not just doing it for fun or as a hobby, it’s what they want to do.” Lee, a recent graduate of Mililani High, will go on to attend UH-West Oahu and Leeward and hopes to “get more fights in the future.”
