Robert Myers didn’t purchase his 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt to modify it…he bought it to get around from A to B. It fit directly into his budget of $15,000 with change to spare.  It wasn’t until after he took a trip around the island with his girlfriend that he realized he essentially was driving a rental car.

“Everywhere I looked, there was a 4-door Cobalt rental car.  I can’t look like another tourist driving around.” says Robert.  He started small to stand out from the crowd.  What started small, turned into bigger things, and then the modification madness followed shortly after.

His first steps were to de-badge the car and then apply some sick window tint.  Next were to add the customary bolt-ons including an Injen CAI and a Tsudo cat back exhaust.  To further eek out some power a Badmab shorty header, custom 2.5 inch downpipe and Magnaflo Hi-flow cat were added plus a 2.4 intake manifold.  Turbo TechRacing solid motor mounts have been added as well.

For awhile, he was satisfied with the ride, but then the itch to participate in autocross beckoned further tuning…primarily suspension.  This ride features a bevy of suspension components including an Eibach sway bar kit, Stance GR+ coilovers, FE5 control arms, sway bar endlinks, and steering rack with MOOG tie rod ends and Turbo Tech racing steering rack spacers.  To provide additional stiffness, poly CAB suspension bushing were added plus a Bwoody rear tie bar, and poly sway bar bushings.  This suspension is ridiculously tuned for performance to say the least.

The vehicle rolls on SS/TC Wheels that have been powder-coated black by Junkshop Pros fitted with Ironman iMoves 225/40ZR18s.  Timkin wheel bearings and hubs have been added for additional strength and the front features R1 Concepts slotted rotors with Hawk HPS brake pads.

You wouldn’t think by looking at it, but this car was once on fire…back in February 2012, the entire front end was engulfed in flames thanks to some aftermarket halo rings.  Due credit goes to Robert for repairing practically the entire engine bay on his own and out-of-pocket.  Step-by-step, he sourced the replacement parts including the entire front end, all the electronics in the engine bay, the fender liners, etc.

Once drivable, the car was in serious need of a re-paint thanks the scorched exterior.  Junkship Pros again came to the rescue with a gorgeous custom paint job.   The paint is deep and visually striking thanks to the addition of the blacked out look that Robert has given the car including the AVS headlight covers and tinted LED tail lights.  The interior is accented by carbon fiber dash trim, some DEFI gauges, and Schroth 3 point harness to hold him in place.

In addition to the performance mods, Robert’s Cobalt also features some fantastic in-car audio featuring a 1200 watt Interfire amp, 6.5 cones, and 6/9s.  A Pioneer AVH P4300DVD head unit provides the tunes to pump out the Memphis Audio 12-inch sub in the rear.

A serious build of the car is still on the  horizon…once Robert acquires a second car, the gloves will come off and the true build will begin.  Robert is proud to drive his Cobalt in part because there aren’t many modified ones on the island.  It’s a bit unique and a little different from the norm.  That’s just fine with Robert.
