Darrell Delmundo spent a majority of his formative years around old muscle cars in his hometown of Waianae. In high school, he’d pass the weekends with an uncle at the track and with his cousins, who owned just about every type of Honda model. So it seems appropriate to say that he was raised with a love for the modded.

“I’ve always wanted to build a car for myself. I never had the means for it, but I promised myself that if I ever had the chance, I would build a car the way I wanted,” said Delmundo, 29.

Although he claimed to have never been interested in the Scion brand, the newly introduced 2014 Scion FR-S immediately grabbed his attention. While scoping out specs and images on the Internet, he spotted the Scion and fell in love with the modernized take on the ’80s classic. He decided to purchase the car knowing exactly what he was going to do to it.

Thanks to the shared platform with the BRZ, the aftermarket was already there. Three months after purchasing the Scion, Delmundo had all the parts on order and waiting for installation. The first part to arrive was the custom Airrex digital air suspension installed by Marshall Lum. The intent was to lower the stance of the car without being forced to handle Oahu’s roads on a static setup. The trunk hides a trick install lit up with red LEDs. In addition, the drop covers a 3-piece set of beautiful wheels from Infiniteweks.

Soon after the arrival of the suspension came the bodywork. Delmundo chose the Rocketbunny Version 2 Aero kit, an amazing set of multiple components that was produced in collaboration with Greddy. Although this kit is extremely popular now, at the time, it was rare. In fact, this was the first kit in Hawaii and it blew everyone away almost immediately. Initially, the entire kit was factory white, but it’s since been painted in several layers of Deep Teal. A Street Faction GT Wing adds some impressive downforce and extreme looks as well.

Although the car looked aggressive, it was rolling much less under the hood. So, Delmundo started to work on the performance. Following a tuning mishap that left it damaged, the engine was pulled for a complete makeover. The short block was replaced with a Crawford version that has been fully built with a ton of goodies. The addition of a Speed by Design Stage 1 Turbo now puts the horsepower rating at an expected 400 plus.  Delmundo is super excited to get it on the dyno this week and witness its true potential.

Once done with the exterior and motor work, Delmundo decided to redo the upholstery and trimming. He chose a custom-quilted stitch by Al’s Upholstery for the door panels, console, and front and rear seats. An NRG steering wheel adapter and quick release hub were mated to a MOMO Motorsport aftermarket steering wheel. Finally, a Neo-Diamond shift knob was added.

The result: This FR-S has been transformed into one of the sickest rides on the planet. And for those with similar ambitions when it comes to the modding world, Delmundo advised car lovers to stay the course and make their automobile ambitions come true. Or, as he puts it, “Follow your passion and just do it.”
