Sometimes automotive enthusiasts go through phases. In fact, it can be quite amazing to look back at how much time, money and work can be put into project cars.
For more than 15 years, Sheldon Young poured thousands of dollars and hours into his vehicles. Then in 1998, he decided to take some time off to rest and recuperate from his exhaustive financial and time commitments.
Fast-forward several years and Sheldon is now back in full swing with this 2013 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec. He happened upon the ride while trying to avoid the typical JDM scene; in essence, he wanted to try something new and different. So, he walked into the dealership and came out with the car.
After picking up the new ride, his initial mod was to improve visibility with a 6k HID kit from Tokyo Auto plus Diode Dynamics LED switchback turn signals and fog lights. For a greater cooling performance and visual kick, he installed a prototype Ark Performance fiberglass hood that sits comfortably in place of the original. The addition of Tokyo Auto side skirts, an M&S front lip and one of the most insane paint jobs I’ve ever seen further enhance the exterior of this ride.
The paint used is known as Plastidip, which is a relatively new product to Hawaii. Easily removable but hardy enough to survive your local car wash, the material is quite interesting and can be peeled off in strips when a new color is preferred. Currently, the entire car has been coated in Plastidip Holographic Flake, which gleams like a rainbow of colors when viewed under bright lights.
The already capable suspension has been upgraded with DGR Sport coilovers while the wheels have been replaced with Work VS-XS Wheels set at 19×9.5 in the front with OHTSU 225/35ZR19s 245/35ZR19s in the rear. For additional stopping power, Brembo brakes as well as Project Kics Neo Chrome lug nuts.
The engine is mildly modified because of the relative newness of the vehicle. For now, it features an SFR tuned ecu, a prototype carbon-fiber snorkel and some definite dress-up in the engine bay. For additional power, an Injen-polished short ram intake and custom dual exhaust has been installed by RAD Motorsports. Also, a Sickspeed Chrome oil catch can and plasti-dips provide additional visual flair.
Not to be excluded, the interior features a very car Sickspeed Spiked Neo Chrome knuckle-buster shift knob as well as more plasti-dip touches here and there. The center console has been coated in a gorgeous red plasti-dip that really brings out the race in the cockpit-styled interior.
Although Sheldon is very pleased with the current form of the car, he’s far from finished. Already, he is starting a new build for the automobile — one he calls “Nemesis” because of its temperamental nature. It’s the next level of the car-build that he eagerly anticipates.
“I build my car the way I like it. I have pride in what I do, and if people enjoy it, then that’s all that matters,” he says.
