Let’s get serious for a moment: It’s not every day you get to sit in a half-a-million dollar supercar. And yet, that’s just what I did just a few days ago, courtesy of Jerry Haverland and his 2012 Lamborghini Aventador. I’d tell you to pick your jaw up off the floor, but mine’s still on it.

Jerry has done well for himself, obviously, but he’s a true automotive enthusiast. His first profession was as a machinist and mechanic, but his initial break came a few years out of high school while working at a car wash in his hometown of Oregon. Apparently, he ran the car wash so well that he soon became the owner. Along the way came more business opportunities, including the startup of Jerry’s development company, which allowed him to own a plethora of vehicles — some of them dream cars, some of them not.

His first ride was a Mach 1 Mustang. He’s also owned muscle cars such as the 1978 Trans Am as well as exotics like the Ferrari 308, which was popularized by the 80s TV series Magnum, P.I. He also owned the legendary 25th anniversary Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa. So yeah, this man knows his rides.

Although he’s based in Kahului, Maui, Jerry now owns a successful, independent car rental business and his intention has always been to expand to Oahu. He just needed a reason to get his foot in the door, which brings us to the phenomenal Aventador LP700-4 gracing these pages. This car is absolutely stonkin’ amazing! In many ways, this gorgeous ride is a schoolboy’s fantasy. It’s one of those of cars that cause the local populace to stop whatever they’re doing just to stare slack-jawed as it zooms past.

The car was purchased as the showpiece for Jerry’s new adventure, Hawaii Supercars, which allows the so-inclined the opportunity to rip it up in three to four honest-to-goodness supercars on a trek across Oahu. And thank you for this brilliant idea. Yours truly had the opportunity to follow the Aventador back from our shoot at Kaena Point in a Lamborghini Superleggera. I haven’t stopped grinning since. Seriously, it was awesome.

This car is pure lust. It uses Lamborghini’s 700PS V12 engine and screams like an F1 car as it’s put through its paces. Performance wise, the car will rip from 0-60MPH in less than 3 seconds with a top speed of over 217mph. It shifts gears in 50 milliseconds. I can’t even count that fast!

Looks wise, it features the aggressive lines and stance you expect from Lamborghini with sweeping curves, huge grills, and vents of all shapes and sizes that are functional to boot. It rides on massive 19×9 alloys in the front with 20x12s in the rear, highlighted by Pirelli P Zero Corsas to grip the road. The brakes are enormous, featuring two-piece ventilated carbon-ceramic discs with 4 piston calipers that will drop you from 60 mph in only 100 feet. Wow!

As for the interior, it makes you feel like you’ve just stepped into a fighter cockpit filled with sumptuous leather and doodads to ogle at. One look at the weapons grade start button will have you believing you’re in one. And when the digital display lights up, you start believing you’re a kid all over again.

In a word, this ride is epic. What’s even more epic is the chance to drive one. Jerry knows what it’s like to feel that awe and magic and he’s willing to share. Chee-hoo!
