Ax Kick From The Guard

BY BURTON RICHARDSON

In kickboxing, there is a great tool called the ax kick. A fighter brings his leg up high over the opponent’s head and then chops down with devastating power. But this kick can also be done from your back!

The ax kick works well against an opponent who is standing in your guard. He may expect an up kick, but not a down kick! The trick to the ax kick is to get your kicking foot above his head. Put your right foot on the opponent’s thigh and use it like a step to lift your hip high. Raise your left foot and bring that heel crashing down. You have a good chance at a KO, or you may daze him enough to apply a quick submission. Use that ax kick!
